LPGA Toto Japan Classic Trivia and Notes

Jane Blalock’s 27th and final LPGA win happened at the 1985 Mazda Japan Classic. Annika Sorenstam won this tournament five times in a row from 2001 through 2005. That shares the record for most overall wins at the same LPGA tournament, and holds the record for most consecutive wins at the same LPGA tournament. At the 2003 tournament, Sorenstam set the LPGA Tour record for lowest 54-hole stroke total with a winning total of 192. She also set the tour’s all-time record for most strokes under par in a 54-hole event at 24-under. Also in 2003, Sorenstam established the tournament’s 18-hole scoring record of 63, a mark that has been tied several times since. But at the 2003 tournament, Annika shot that score two rounds in a row, in the first and second rounds. Grace Park was runner-up to Sorenstam three consecutive years, 2002-2004. But in 2003 and 2004, Sorenstam’s winning margin over Park was nine strokes both times. No other golfer has won more than twice, but among those 2-time champs is Hall of Famer Betsy King. King won her titles back-to-back in 1992-93. Shanshan Feng also won back-to-back in 2016-17. Momoko Ueda punctuated her victory at the 2007 Mizuno Classic with a double eagle in the final round. At the time, it was just the eighth double eagle in the history of the JLPGA Tour. Ueda earned her LPGA membership via that win.
