Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch features a massive roster of fighters from your favorite video game franchises. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to get those Smash Bros. unlockables.

These cheats are exclusively for the 2018 game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch. If you’re looking for Super Smash Bros. Melee cheats, we have those as well.

How to Unlock Characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The eight original fighters from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64 are available from the start. Other characters can be unlocked in three ways:

  • Free their spirits in Adventure mode.Beat Classic mode with different characters.Spend time fighting against other players or the CPU.

When you unlock a character in Adventure mode, they become available in all other modes, but the reverse is not true. The only way to play as every character in Adventure mode is to free their spirits.

How to Unlock Characters in Classic Mode

After you complete Classic mode with any character, you’ll face a new challenger. Defeat the challenger to unlock them as a playable character.

Unlockable characters are sorted into groups that determine the order you face them in Classic mode. When you beat Classic mode with any character, you’ll be challenged by the next character in the group.

For example, when you finish Classic mode with Kirby, you’ll unlock Ness. Then, if you beat Classic mode again with Kirby or Ness, you’ll unlock Jigglypuff. If you’ve already unlocked a character by other means, you’ll face the next challenger in that group. Once you unlock all characters in a group, you’ll unlock the next available character in another group. Use the chart below to determine the unlock order.

Character Group Unlock Order

Mario Sonic > Bayonetta > Little Mac > Ike > Luigi > Roy > Dr. Mario > Olimar > Bowser

Donkey Kong Bowser > Pokemon Trainer > Rosalina and Luma > King Dedede > Sheik > Greninja > Diddy Kong > Duck Hunt > Sonic

Link King K. Rool > Ice Climbers > Simon > Meta Knight > Snake > Young Link > Richter > Toon Link > Sonic

Samus Inkling > Wii Fit Trainer > Pit > Incineroar > Dark Samus > Cloud > Wario > Dark Pit > Sonic

Yoshi Lucario > Marth > Ryu > Ganondorf > Lucina > Ridley > Chrom > Ken > Sonic

Kirby Ness > Jigglypuff > Pac-Man > Zelda > Robin > Corrin > Lucas > Palutena > Sonic

Fox Captain Falcon > Zero Suit Samus > Peach > Falco > Daisy > Bowser Jr. > Wolf > Mewtwo > Sonic

Pikachu Villager > Shulk > R.O.B. > Mega Man > Isabelle > Mr. Game & Watch > Pichu > Sonic

If you lose repeatedly to a challenger, go to Games and More > Challenger’s Approach for a rematch. If the rematch option isn’t available, then you must wait for that character to challenge you again.

How to Unlock Characters by Fighting

When you participate in matches against other players or the CPU, you’ll occasionally be challenged by a new character. This may happen after a round of Smash mode, or when you exit one of the other modes after playing for a while. You must actively play the game to trigger these encounters, which means you can’t just put down the controller and leave the game running. Defeat the challenger to unlock them as a playable character.

Challengers appear in a fixed order. If you have already unlocked a character by other means, you’ll face the next challenger on the list:

Ness (Earthbound)Zelda (Legend Of Zelda)Bowser (Mario Bros.)Pit (Kid Icarus)Inkling (Splatoon)Villager (Animal Crossing)Marth (Fire Emblem)Young Link (Legend Of Zelda)Wii Fit Trainer (Wii Fit)Ice Climbers (Ice Climber)Captain Falcon (F-Zero)Princess Peach (Mario Bros.)Ryu (Street Fighter)Ike (Fire Emblem)Jigglypuff (Pokemon)King K. Quit the game and return to the Nintendo Switch home screen.

Restart the game.

Using the second controller, begin a new Smash match and set the rules to 1 Stock.

Defeat Dark spirits until the Master Hand reappears, then defeat him a second time to free him.

Defeat the Crazy Hand to give the forces of Dark the advantage.

Defeat Light spirits until the Crazy Hand reappears, then defeat him a second time to free him. Both hands will go to the same space at the top of the board.

Balance the powers of Light and Dark by leaving roughly the same number of spirits on both sides of the board.

Go to where both hands are on the board for another battle.

After the battle, take the center path, and you’ll be on your way to the true ending.
